Incredibly, it’s almost that most bewitching time of year–Halloween. Pumpkins, scarecrows, hay bales and ghouls have already appeared in grocery and retail shops, and people are beginning to make their Halloween plans. Whether you’re staying at home to greet trick-or-treaters, or heading out to a crazy Halloween costume bash, it’s time to start planning your ghoulish garb. What could be better than getting decked out in the most spectacular costume in the neighborhood? And if you’re going to have the best outfit, you need to think in advance. If you don’t, you’ll wind up with one of the same costumes off of the rack of the temporary stores that everyone and their mom is wearing. If you want to stand out, order something on the internet that nobody else will be wearing.

Now, if a costume is key to a fantastic Halloween, what is the key to the costume? Why, your hat obviously! Other pieces of clothing, accessories and makeup can all be improvised fairly easily. But think of how many identities can be readily identified by their hats. Get an Indiana Jones fedora hat, one of Davy Crocketts coonskin caps, or one of these for a period costume, and you’re ready to go. If you have the perfect hat, the rest will fall into place.

So buy your hat now, so that it comes in plenty of time, then commence planning the other items of your outfit. If you don’t have anything remotely resembling your chosen identity’s clothing at home, go to your local Good Will or thrift store. Your hat will fire the imaginations of all who see your costume, so it’s less essential to get all of the other elements exact. For instance, add a tan long-sleeve shirt to your coonskin cap. Cut fringe on  the bottom and cuffs, and it’s straightaway a frontiersman’s deerskin outfit.
